Biographical / Historical
Athens High School, originally located on Childs Street, was established in 1909. It became an accredited four-year, six-course school in 1913. In 1915, the school moved into the enlarged and renovated old courthouse on Prince Avenue. The old school building continued to operate as the Childs Street School until it was burned down in 1966. After outgrowing the facility on Prince Avenue, Athens High School finally settled in a new building erected on Milledge Avenue in 1952, and the old school building was demolished. Following the desegregation of the Clarke County School District, Athens High School and Burney-Harris High School officially merged in 1970, which led to the school’s name being changed to Clarke Central High School.
