Scope and Contents

The collection includes local, state, regional, and few North America maps, but the bulk of the collection comprises Athens, Georgia maps. These include city maps from the 19th-21st centuries; surveys for various banks, parks, and subdivisions; planning maps created by the Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission; early to mid-20th century Sanborn maps; and architectural drawings by J.G. Beacham.

This collection has no restrictions. This collection is open to the public. Library policy on photography and photocopying will apply.

Biographical / Historical

The collection includes maps mainly relating to the city of Athens, and others relating to Georgia and the Southeast, from various sources. The maps are assembled under one collection for the ease of access and use in the Heritage Room. Included in the collection are various types of maps, brochures, and visitor guides.

1244 Items (The maps are housed in the oversize drawers, specifically OSD #1-7, 11-19, 22-23, 26-30, and in the oversize boxes located on the shelves above the drawers.)

Overview

The map collection comprises over 1,000 maps dating from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. The majority of the maps depict Athens during the twentieth century, but the collection also includes maps of the various counties surrounding Athens-Clarke county, maps of states in the Southeast, and a few North America maps. There are various types of maps within the collection including topographical, plat, planning, theme, and road maps.
