Scope and Contents

This collection consists largely of reference materials collected by the Athens-Clarke Safe Cycling Association. There are materials on the following subjects: bicycle safety and care, pedestrian and cycling facility design, comparisons of cycling to other forms of transport, and safety regulations, in addition to proposed plans for Athens-Clarke county bike paths. Of note is the binder “Transportation Planning for Livable Communities”, which contains documents from a variety of sources on the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991.

Two items in the inventory provided by the Association are not found within the collection: Bicycle Safety: What Every Parent Should Know, Bicycle Education Consortium; Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities in the Federal Aid Highway Program, Federal Highway Administration, U. S. Department of Transportation.

This collection has no restrictions. This collection is open to the public. Library policy on photography and photocopying will apply. Advance notice may be required. Apply in the Heritage Room for access.

Biographical / Historical

The Athens-Clarke Safe Cycling Association, now known as Bike Athens, has sought to educate the public on proper bicycle safety and work with state and local governments to improve infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. Currently they promote cycling, walking, and public transit in order to build equality in transportation. They believe that affordable, accessible, transportation is a critical component of social and economic mobility.
