John C. Braswell collection

The collection consists entirely of the following items: the Legion of Merit medal and certificate, the latter dated August 27, 1943 and signed by Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, that was awarded posthumously; the U.S. flag (with 48 stars) that draped the coffin of John C. Braswell at his funeral; Braswell’s pilot wings; a sterling-silver trophy, an example of the John C. Braswell Memorial Trophy in Advertising, as the inscription on the trophy states, "Awarded annually for distinguished advertising among Georgia high school newspapers by Mr. and Mrs. Earl B. Braswell in affectionate memory of their son who lost his life in the service of his country." And two paintings: one, dated using the inscription on the back, done by Lynne Braswell in 1982, portrays her mother at the time of her mother's marriage to Jack Braswell; the second, undated, portrays Jack Braswell in his uniform. The second is signed "Hone" on the painting; we do not yet have any information regarding the identity of this painter. The full inscription on the back of the first: "Nellie Goldstein Braswell Leier. Pastel portrait by her daughter, Lynn Braswell, in celebration of her (Nellie's) 65th birthday, taken from photo from album about the time she married Jack Braswell."
