Whitehead Media Group and WNGM-TV 34 collection

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Collection number: MSS-057

Scope and Contents

The letters, mostly handwritten by residents of Athens and surrounding communities, largely pertain to the potential cancellation of certain programs and broader changes in the station's format. Much of the business and legal documentation is still housed in the original folders. Many of these folders are marked as monthly reports, but more likely contain material used to write or present monthly reports, not the reports themselves. Multiple folders contain materials pertaining to the station's dispute with MediaOne about the station's inclusion in Atlanta-area markets. Also included are F. C. C. licenses and similar legal documents, a significant number of advertising-buy receipts and similar documentation, and materials pertaining to changes in the station's facilities after Whitehead's purchase. Some of the F. C. C. reports, plus a few other documents, provide scattered documentation of the content of WNGM's local programming.

Historical

WNGM first broadcast on April 18, 1989. The station aired original programming, such as Mornings with Meg and Athens Community Forum; syndicated programming, especially religious shows; and reruns of series and films. Whitehead Media purchased the station, 1995-1996. Soon thereafter, in 1998, U. S. A. Broadcasting (no longer extant, but related to the U. S. A. Networks company) purchased the station. At some point toward the end of the decade, the station's call letters changed to WHOT. In 2001-2002, the station changed hands again, becoming an affiliate of Univision and taking on its current call letters, WUVG.
