Athens Community Council on Aging's History of the Station collection

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Collection number: MSS-051

Scope and Contents

In addition to a copy of The History of the Station, the collection includes correspondence, financial documents, photographs, clippings, and other materials pertaining to the project. It also contains application materials for other Grassroots projects for which the Council received grants, namely: Book Arts for Adults, in 1996, and Quilting in the Community: “Giving Quilts,” in 1999. For one set of photographs, the names of the persons pictured are written on the back of the photographs. For a second set of photographs, provided in 2020 by Kathryn Fowler, the former head of the A. C. C. A., a key is provided identifying the persons in the photograph.

Additional materials provided in 2020 by Fowler include original recordings, on audio cassettes, of the interviews featured in The History of the Station and additional interviews that were not transcribed for the book, either because the content of the interviews was deemed to be too minor or not pertinent; or due to time and staffing constraints. These audio cassettes have been copied, creating Wave-file preservation copies.

Biographical / Historical

Founded in 1967, the Athens Community Council on Aging (A. C. C. A.) has consistently expanded its services over the course of more than a half-century. It currently provides services for the elderly in 27 Georgia counties.

In 1997, the Council received a grant from the Northeast Georgia Regional Development Center, which was responsible for allocating funds made available for the Grassroots Arts Program by the Georgia Council of the Arts. The grant allowed the Countil to embark on a “reminiscence program” regarding the former railroad station on Hoyt Street near downtown Athens. The program led to the publication of a book entitled The History of the Station: A Grassroots Arts Project of the Athens Community Council on Aging.

Overview

Related Materials

Additional materials provided by Kathryn Fowler in 2020, mostly photocopies of clippings and other printed documents, comprise a vertical file on the Station, the name of both a restaurant located in the former passenger-depot portion of the train station (now the A. C. C. A. headquarters) and other businesses located in that building and in the neighboring former freight-terminal building, which was largely destroyed by fires in 1995 and 1998. The Station restaurant and several of the other businesses first opened in 1972, after renovation of the buildings undertaken by Lee Epting and others involved in W. E. B. Enterprises. Over the next two decades, businesses located in the buildings included T. K. Harty’s Saloon, a nightclub and bar, and the Grit, a coffeehouse, restaurant, and artist’s space that ultimately became a vegetarian restaurant of the same name located on Prince Avenue. Please ask Heritage Room staff about access to the vertical files.
