Biographical / Historical
Born in Buford, Georgia in 1905, Martin moved to Athens early in his life and remained there until his death. He was a columnist, historian, salesman, and author. He is most known for his yearly portrayal of Santa Claus in Athens and across northeast Georgia. He began this tradition in 1931 and continued it until the 1970s. He read children’s letters to Santa on the radio and appeared in person at churches and civic organizations.
Martin worked as a columnist for the Athens Banner-Herald. The column, “A Little Bit About This and That,” which ran from 1963 to 1972, discussed Athens history. This body of historical work led to the Athens-Clarke County government naming Martin as its Honorary Historian. He also published a booklet on the history of St. Mary’s Hospital. Martin died in November 1972.
