Biographical / Historical

In the years roughly spanning 2000-2005, the Clarke-Oconee Genealogical Society undertook a project to document the history of churches in Clarke and Oconee counties. As initially proposed by Heritage Room librarian Laura W. Carter, the project was linked to the Athens Bicentennial, celebrated in 2001. Nelle Price Epps chaired a committe created by the Society and another member of the committee, Carroll McGuffy, prepared a survey that was sent out to a large number of churches in Athens. The committee quickly realized that the potential scale and scope of the project were larger than anticipated and that they would not complete their work within a year. In 2002, two large three-ring binders of materials, representing a “work in progress,” were donated to the Heritage Room. They are in the book catalog (see the Related Materials note).

Many of the files in this collection consist only of a short overview of the church in question. These documents presumably derive from responses to the survey. Unfortunately they were not dated (though many can be dated approximately, based on their content) and documentation of the project beyond 2002 is limited. Other files may only include newspaper clippings. For several of the older churches, especially those with large, active congregations, a broader array of materials are included, providing an extensive understanding of the organization’s history. As materials were collected and then donated to the Heritage Room, churches from a wider geographical expanse were included, as were non-Christian organizations, thus leading to the designation, places of worship. Additional materials have been added by Heritage Room staff in recent years.
