Historical

Originally named the Altrusa Institute and founded in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1917, Altrusa International is an international service organization for women. Under the strong influence of early leader Mamie L. Bass, Altrusa became a civic outlet for the increasing number of women in the workplace during the First World War. Over the years, besides adding chapters across the United States, the organization expanded into Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, India, Great Britain, Chile, and other countries.

The Athens chapter was founded in 1957. In its service to the Athens-Clarke County area, the organization engaged in literacy and other educational projects.
