Biographical / Historical

Founded in 1967, the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation helped foster an historic-preservation movement in Athens, saving structures such as the Church-Waddel-Brumby House (currently the Athens Welcome Center) and the Franklin House from potential demolition. The Foundation has led the way in advocating for an historic-preservation ordinance in Athens and has assisted neighborhoods in applying for recognition as historic districts. The Foundation organizes walking tours of historic neighborhoods and sites in Athens and hosts other events, such as in recent years their annual Mardi Gras Masquerade. In 2019, the Foundation renamed itself Historic Athens, in accordance with similar organizations in Georgia like Historic Augusta, Historic Columbus, and the Historic Savannah Foundation.
