Historical

The Friends of the Library is a 501c(3) non-profit organization that benefits the Athens-Clarke County Library through hosting authors, concerts, and the annual library book sale. Additionally, the Friends of the Library provide supplemental funding to a variety of Athens-Clarke Library projects including Summer Reading. They provide the link between the library and the community by fostering communication between the library and library patrons. In the mid-1980s it became apparent that the library needed to move from its former location on the corner of Lumpkin and Dougherty streets to a larger location. The library was able to expand to its Baxter Street location because of the project’s inclusion in the Sales Tax Referendum in 1987. The Friends of the Library held programs and created a scrapbook to encourage the public to support the Referendum to support the library.
