With origins as early as 1883, when the Georgia Electric Light Company was established, the Georgia Power Company is currently the largest of four electric utilities owned and operated by Southern Company. In the early twentieth century, after the consolidation of several railway and electric companies, the Georgia Railway and Power Company emerged, powering street lights and trolley lines in Atlanta.
