Optimist Club collection

 Collection
Collection number: MSS-105

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection is comprised of scrapbooks, many of them created to be submitted to Optimist Club scrapbook competitions. The scrapbooks span more than half a century, and as noted above extensively document the club’s activities. They include photographs, newspaper clippings, event programs, brochures, and thank-you notes from students, among other items.

Box 2 includes two large recognition banners, a larger scrapbook (for the years 1953-1954), large posters from the Christmas-tree sales, and commemorative items.

Box 3 includes two gavels, one of which was presented by Randy Barnett of the Tallulah Falls School, the other only bearing an Optimist Club symbol; a commemorative cup with the Optimist International logo and text stating, “The President’s Mug 1971-1972”; a Pyramid of Power, commemorating the presidency of Donald J. Hand, 1983-1984; and a bell with a Howard Sanders nameplate.

Box 4 includes a few oversize items that would otherwise be in box 1 but mostly is filled with the loose pages of the Opti-Mrs. Club scrapbooks. The remainder of the scrapbooks, found in boxes 5-10, are still intact.

The scrapbooks contain a wealth of information about the club and its activities. The 1993-1994, for example, notes how many column inches of coverage the club received in local newspapers. It also provides some details about the Optimists in Action day, on June 8, 1994, when members pressure-washed the sidewalks of downtown Athens

The photographs are largely from the 1990s, in contrast to the wide temporal span of the scrapbooks.

Biographical / Historical

The major local branch of the Optimist Club was first established in 1949, with J. B. Tanner as president and a charter party taking place on February 15th at Charlie Williams’ Pinecrest Lodge. In these early years, the club brought speakers to town but mostly focused on the primary Optimist mission of helping boys to become more involved in the community. The club also participated in the Inter-Club Council, founded in 1947 in an effort to coordinate the activities of the city’s social clubs, including the Kiwanis, the Rotary, the Lions, the Exchange Club, the Woman’s Club, the Athens League of Women Voters, and the Junior Assembly.

A women’s auxiliary of the club, the Opti-Mrs. Club, was also established by the early 1950s. Its activities are documented in the scrapbooks found in this collection. This club paid for female students’ college expenses, held bake sales and ran concession stands, and provided gifts to needy families and hospitalized children. The scrapbooks include photographs, thank-you notes, meeting programs, and documentation of the club’s officers and activities. Over time, the club began including girls and sponsoring girls’ activities, well before the national club began allowing women members in 1987.

The Athens Optimist club was informally known as the Evening Optimist Club, leading to youth sports’ teams that it sponsored being named Evening Optimists. Among the sporting activities the Athens Optimists sponsored are Junior World of Golf, Little League Baseball, and Athens Youth Organization football and cheerleading. It also sponsored bicycle safety programs (which in later years were held in conjunction with the Twilight Criterium), Youth Appreciation awards (the nominees of which were selected by local schools), oratory contests, and Respect for the Law Week. The oratory contests took place at the Clarke County courthouse initially, later moving to the University of Georgia law school. The Optimists in other cases made donations to organizations such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Athens, the Special Olympics, and the Athens Tutorial Program.

By 1968, another local branch had been established: the Luncheon Optimist Club. The evening and luncheon clubs often worked together to sponsor events. These clubs, like all local Optimist branches, participated in state-level meetings (known as district meetings) and smaller-scaler regional meetings (known as zone meetings). Many of the photographs in this collection document these meetings, including district meetings held in Savannah.

Beginning in 1970, the Evening Optimists sold Christmas trees, setting up at the empty field near the parking lot of the Hawthorne Avenue Y. M. C. A. The 1995-1996 scrapbook notes that the club sold Frasier firs purchased from growers in North Carolina and Virginia and white pines from local growers.

The Evening Optimists at times hosted political events, such as a panel discussion on October 29th, 1990, co-sponsored with the Luncheon Optimists, for which participants debated the relative merits of elected and appointed school boards. The same year, the Evening and Luncheon clubs co-hosted a debate between Gwen O’Looney and E. H. Culpepper, competing to be the chief elected officer (mayor) of the newly-unified Athens-Clarke County. The 1991 scrapbook in this collection contains several photographs of this event.

In a program for the club’s NOW Banquet of 1994, the text defining the club is as follows: “The purposes of the club are to develop Optimism as a philosophy of life; to promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs; to inspire respect for the law; to promote patriotism and work for international accord and friendship among all people; to aid and encourage the development of youth.” That same year, a University branch of the club was established, its charter presentation taking place on May 5, 1994, making it the third Athens branch.

In the new century, the Evening Optimists’ activities have decreased significantly and, by the time these materials were donated to the Heritage Room in 2025, only a few members remained.
