Athens and Clarke County Schools collection
Scope and Contents
Some of the materials pertain to Marian Johnson, a graduate of the Athens High School Class of 1937. Of especial notice is a booklet put together for the 50th-anniversary reunion of that class, as it contains responses to a questionnaire. The responses include short autobiographies and information about the person’s children. Though some of the autobiographies are brief, or only take the form of a list, many provide extensive reviews of the person’s life. As such, it serves as an extraordinary source of genealogical and sociological information about these persons and their families, and more generally about the generation that came of age during the Second World War and lived their adult lives in the post-war era. It is found in Folder 5.
Additional materials pertain to classes of the same era, namely reunions for the classes of 1942 and 1945. These were likely collected by Nelle Epps, who donated some of this archival collection to the Heritage Room. The remainder of the materials span a wide range temporally and topically, with items from Clarke Middle School, Barrow Elementary School, and the Athens Y. M. C. A. This broad range allows for this collection to serve as a catch-all for future donations of a small amount of material (or miscellaneous material) related to Athens primary education.
The Clarke County School District directories found in boxes 3 and 4 provide researchers with a timeline of Athens-Clarke County schools for more than three decades, with addresses and personnel listed for each school in the district, indirectly showing the opening, closing, and renaming dates of schools during the desegregation process and beyond.
The Heritage Room holds several other collections that pertain to Athens-Clarke County schools. These are more specific in content or came from a single donor. Consult the list provided in the Related materials note.

Biographical / Historical
Athens High School opened in 1909 following the establishment of a High School Department in 1907. After initially being located at Childs Street, the school moved to the former county courthouse on Prince Avenue in 1915, where it remained until 1952, at which point it moved to the current Clarke Central building. Athens High and Burney-Harris High merged in 1970 to form Clarke Central High School, with the former Burney-Harris building becoming home to Burney-Harris Middle School (later renamed Burney-Harris-Lyons after the closing of Lyons Junior High School in the early 1980s). Burney-Harris High was originally named Athens High and Industrial School, established in 1917 on Reese Street and becoming in 1922 the first accredited public high school in Georgia for African American students.
