Scope and Contents

This collection consists of nine songbooks; several loose sheets of song lyrics or notations; and a copy of the Descriptive Catalogue of Ames' Theatrical Plays, containing brief descriptions of roughly 500 plays, among other features. The songbooks: the Army Song Book, published by the War Department Commission on Training Camp Activities, 1918; copies of the Cardui Song Book, No. 3 and No. 4, both copyrighted 1908 by the Chattanooga Medicine Company; a copy of the 20th Century Song Book, copyrighted 1904 by the Chattanooga Medicine Company; a copy of the Red Z Song Book, published by J.H. Zeilin and Co. (St. Louis), its title referring to the Simmons Liver Regulator medication; a copy of The Song of the Menominee by Leroy A. Winters; a copy of Ruff-Stuff Songs: Humorous Songs for Male Voices: Old Time Ballads with Complete Music, published 1921 by C.C. Birchard and Co.; a copy of Most Popular Music of the World (publisher unknown) that is falling apart and perhaps missing pages; and an untitled (perhaps incomplete) songbook perhaps published by the Sharples Separator Co. (West Chester, Penn.).

This collection has no restrictions. This collection is open to the public. Library policy on photography and photocopying will apply. Advance notice may be required. Apply in the Heritage Room for access. The exception is the Order of the Eastern Star collection, the directories included in which list the personal addresses and phone numbers of members. These directories are not available to the public.

Biographical / Historical

Ellis Merton Coulter was an historian of the Southeast and Georgia. He taught at the University of Georgia from 1919 to 1958 (serving as chair of the history department from 1940 until retirement), writing numerous books, journal articles, and newspaper columns. He served as the editor of the Georgia Quarterly and was a founding member of the Southern Historical Association. A defender of the Confederacy, Coulter persistently supported the controversial racist interpretation of Reconstruction that was popular in the United States through the first half of the Twentieth Century.
