Biographical / Historical
Founded in 1847, Southern Mutual is one of the oldest insurance companies in the Southeast. It moved to Athens after its first year in business, being initially based in Griffin. It was housed in at least three different locations in downtown Athens, culminating in the seven-story office building erected by the company at the corner of College Avenue and Clayton Street in 1908. In recent decades, the company moved to new headquarters on Alps Road and the building, still known to many as the Southern Mutual building, for many years was officially called the Commerce Building.
