Woods Family correspondence, 1908-1945
Scope and Contents
Among the correspondence are letters from John C. (Johnny) Woods, written while he served in France, 1945, addressed to his aunts, Elizabeth Woods and Ellice Woods (these letters were mailed to Ellice Woods but addressed to his “aunts”). A 1936 letter addressed to Mary Woods written on stationery from the Hotel Ambassador in Prague, Czechoslovakia (present-day Czechia), appears to be written by a “Magdalene.” Most of the letters are earlier (1908-1909) and addressed to Elizabeth Woods when she lived in Berlin: these correspondents include her “devoted cousin, Gussie,” Sam Woods, and “Mary” (presumably Mary Woods). Another later letter, written by Joseph W. Woods (John’s brother) in 1943, is also addressed to Elizabeth Woods. Also included is a 1935 calendar card with a picture of the Westerners, a musical ensemble of the 1920s and 1930s, on the back; and a graduation announcement from the Air Corps Advanced Flying School, Barksdale Field, Louisiana.
