Scope and Contents
The subcollection contains background reading on the topic, including copies of primary and secondary sources. It also includes seven matted photographs of Clarke County mills and equipment; Sanborn maps of cotton mills in Clarke County and a map showing the locations of these mills in Clarke County; an illustration of the powertrain of a mill showing the varied parts as they relate to each other and connect to the water wheel; and diagrams and descriptions of the following mill equipment: power looms, mules, and throstles. Many of these visual components come from newspapers but have been repurposed for exhibition.

This collection has no restrictions. This collection is open to the public. Library policy on photography and photocopying will apply. Advance notice may be required. Apply in the Heritage Room for access. The exception is the Order of the Eastern Star collection, the directories included in which list the personal addresses and phone numbers of members. These directories are not available to the public.
Biographical / Historical
Both the print and visuals materials in this subcollection at least touch upon several textile companies in Athens, Ga., including the Georgia Manufacturing Company (Whitehall), the Princeton Manufacturing Company, Star Thread Mill (Barnett Shoals), the Athens Manufacturing Company (downtown), and Bobbin Mill.
