Scope and Contents
Three letters: one from Stanhope Erwin, addressed to a “Howell” (based on U.S. Census records, his brother) typed on stationery from the Office of Headquarters Detachment, Headquarters Department of the Visayas, Hoilo, Panay [Philippines], dated January 7, 1909; one from Emory Speer, addressed to Judge A. S. Erwin, dated December 26, 1899; and one, an unsigned letter addressed to A. L. Hull, Editor Alumni Cagalogue [University of Georgia]; a postcard for Birkert Clarke & Co., No. 2 John St., New York; an oval-shaped print of a photograph of an unidentified man, with a handwritten inscription on the back: “This is Sara Cobb’s”; a copy of the Athens tax ordinance of 1900; a print of a poem, "A Banker's Plea," attributed to a "H.C.E." of Athens; an Athens Trust & Banking Co. account book, mostly empty, signed on the front; a contract between Moise De Leon and the City of Athens for the construction of Athens High School, dated September 2, 1908; Grand Jury and Traverse Jury lists for Clarke County, 1906; a copy of the 1906 Directory of Rural Residents for Athens, Elberton, and Gainesville, the front cover and pp. 1-16 of which are damaged; a list of Registered Voters (216th, 217th, 218th, 219th, 220th, 241th, 1347th, and 1467th Districts) White and Colored for state elections, 1904; a true bill from a Grand Jury for a case involving William Eberhart and Mose Sims, signed E. A. Angier, U.S. Attorney, and J. A. Hutchinson, Foreman; two envelopes and two price lists for liquor distributors Meyer & Co.

This collection has no restrictions. This collection is open to the public. Library policy on photography and photocopying will apply. Advance notice may be required. Apply in the Heritage Room for access. The exception is the Order of the Eastern Star collection, the directories included in which list the personal addresses and phone numbers of members. These directories are not available to the public.
Biographical / Historical
Emory Speer was a graduate of the University of Georgia and practiced law in Athens. He was a U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 9th Congressional district, 1879-1883, and then served as a judge for the Southern District of Georgia from 1885 until his death. A. S. Erwin was also a lawyer and judge. Stanhope and Howell Erwin are his sons.
