Scope and Contents

Much of the collection consists of 28 letters to Empire State, from Thomas Foundries, the Kent Mill Company, the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, the Sturtevant Mill Company, the Babcock and Wilcox Company, and the Combustion Engineering Company. Also included are two issues of the Kent Mill Company's Bulletin newsletter, an issue of the Southern Cultivator and Dixie Farmer (81.22, November 15, 1923), a clipping of unknown provenance, a receipt, an Empire State Chemical publication entitled Seed Time and Harvest, a print-out and two loose extra pages from said publication, and an Empire State Chemical calendar/ notebook. The oversize folder contains two architectural plans and one 19-by-15-inches photograph of Empire State's manufacturing facility.

Conditions Governing Access

This collection has no restrictions. This collection is open to the public. Library policy on photography and photocopying will apply. Advance notice may be required. Apply in the Heritage Room for access. The exception is the Order of the Eastern Star collection, the directories included in which list the personal addresses and phone numbers of members. These directories are not available to the public.

Biographical / Historical

E. R. Hodgson, a Confederate veteran known as “Prince,” founded the Empire State Chemical Company in the 1890s with his 11 brothers and one sister. The company lasted until 1950s. The site of its manufacturing facility is currently occupied, at least in part, by a granite quarry, near the Athens Ben Epps Airport.
