Scope and Contents

These photographs were taken by Alfred T. Humphreys as part of a class in photography at the University of Georgia at some point in the late 1970s-early 1980s. Each 8 by 10 inches, they show sites in Athens and Oconee County, Georgia. The photographs have been given the following descriptive titles: Brumby-Waddell House with the Federal Building in the background (Dougherty Street, Athens); Federal Building (Hancock Avenue, Athens, Georgia); The Athens Double-Barrelled Cannon, City Hall (College and Hancock Avenues, Athens, Georgia); University of Georgia Arch (Broad Street at College Avenue, Athens, Georgia); Georgia Center for Continuing Education (Lumpkin Street, Athens, Georgia); Georgia Center for Continuing Education (Lumpkin Street, Athens, Georgia), dark exposure; Eagle Tavern Georgia Historical Commission sign (Watkinsville, Oconee County, Georgia); Eagle Tavern (Watkinsville, Oconee County, Georgia).

Conditions Governing Access

This collection has no restrictions. This collection is open to the public. Library policy on photography and photocopying will apply. Advance notice may be required. Apply in the Heritage Room for access. The exception is the Order of the Eastern Star collection, the directories included in which list the personal addresses and phone numbers of members. These directories are not available to the public.

Biographical / Historical

Alfred T. Humphreys died in 1997. His wife donated these photographs to the Athens Welcome Center. Laura Stahler, director of the Welcome Center at the time, gave the photographs to the Heritage Room in 1999. Mrs. Humphreys was contacted in December of 1999 for information about the photographs and at this time stated that the photographs may be freely reproduced.
