Biographical / Historical

The origins of the Athens Banner-Herald date back to 1827, with the founding of the Athenian, which became the Southern Banner in 1832. For much of the nineteenth century, this paper competed with the Southern Watchman. In 1882, the two papers merged. Numerous name changes, for both the daily and weekly editions of the paper, ensued in the next few decades, finally settling on the Athens Banner and the Weekly Banner.

Originally a separate newspaper established in 1912, the Athens Daily Herald combined with the Athens Banner beginning Sunday, June 26, 1921, creating a single operation: the Banner published in the mornings, the Herald in the evenings, with the exception of the consolidated Sunday edition of the paper, now entitled the Athens Banner-Herald instead of the Weekly Banner. Soon enough, more changes were afoot: due to financial struggles, beginning Monday, February 12, 1923, a single newspaper, the Athens Banner-Herald, was published in the afternoons, replacing the dual morning-afternoon editions.

In 1965, a competitor emerged: the Athens Daily News, publishing in the mornings. Only two years later, however, the two papers merged, once again giving Athens two dailies run by the same company. The morning Daily News continued to accompany the evening Banner-Herald until 2001, when a combined version, bearing only the Athens Banner-Herald title, began to be published in the mornings.
