Scope and Contents

The Athens-Clarke County Library subscribes to Flagpole; the current year's issues are available in the Heritage Room. At the end of each year, the issues from that year are placed in archival boxes in the Heritage Room vault. With permission from Flagpole, the Athens-Clarke County Library partners with the Digital Library of Georgia to make previous issues available online. Once digitized, originals are returned to the vault. Users can access digitized issues online at the Georgia Historic Newspapers website. Some pre-1995 issues also comprise part of this collection, held in Box 1: November 2, 1988 (Vol. 2 Issue 9), November 8, 1989 (Vol. 3, No. 31), January 3, 1990 (Vol. 4, No. 1), May 16, 1990 (Vol. 4, No. 19), July 25, 1990 (Vol. 4, No. 26), October 10, 1990 (Vol. 4, No. 34), and August 14, 1991 (Vol. 5, No. 22).

This collection has no restrictions. This collection is open to the public. Library policy on photography and photocopying will apply. Advance notice may be required. Apply in the Heritage Room for access.

Biographical / Historical

Flagpole was established in 1987, largely to cover the Athens music scene. It has expanded its scale and scope over the years. Pete McCommons has been the editor of Flagpole for much of the newspaper’s later history.

Arrangement

The collection is organized in a single series, with each year's set of issues contained in a single box, with the exception of 1997 and 1998, together in a single box; and 2021 and 2022, together in a single box. 2023 and 2024 will also likely be held in a single box.

Related Materials

Also part of the Periodicals collection, the Rollins M. (Pete) McCommons collection contains issues of the United Free Press, which McCommons helped establish in the 1970s. Also, the Athens Observer, which for three decades operated as a weekly broadsheet newspaper competing with the daily Athens Banner-Herald/ Athens Daily News but which also bears similarities to “alternative newsweeklies” such as Flagpole, is available on microfilm in the Heritage Room.
