Biographical / Historical
Part of the Old Athens Cemetery, also known as the Jackson Street Cemetery, had been covered over, and possibly in some cases disturbed, by the construction of Baldwin Hall in the years, 1938-1942. Only with the building’s renovation was this part of the cemetery made accessible. Amid claims made by faculty and others that the University administration had not devoted the necessary attention to identifying the buried persons and moving their remains, this study confirmed that the gravesites were those of Black residents of Athens, most of whom had been slaves, though some date from after emancipation. The remains were reinterred at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
