Biographical / Historical

The newspaper later became the Athens Daily News, a competitor to the Athens Banner-Herald. After only a couple years as an independent daily, the Daily News merged with the Banner-Herald. In its earlier incarnation as a weekly advertising sheet, the paper had limited original content in addition to advertisements. The ads provide some images amid a wealth of textual information that could be of use to historical researchers. In the early 1960s, new shopping centers like Beechwood significantly expanded Athens’ shopping choices; these suburban businesses as well as older urban and rural establishments advertised in this paper, which billed itself as “Northeast Georgia’s Feature Weekly.”
