Scope and Contents

Much of this collection consists of a copy of the autobiography of John Allan written in 1828, accompanied by letters from Anglen to Clark and Carter. The handwritten autobiography was transcribed by Anglen.

This collection has no restrictions. This collection is open to the public. Library policy on photography and photocopying will apply. Advance notice may be required. Apply in the Heritage Room for access. The exception is the Order of the Eastern Star collection, the directories included in which list the personal addresses and phone numbers of members. These directories are not available to the public.

Biographical / Historical

John Allan moved to Athens in 1803, having immigrated from England two years prior. Allan attended the University of Georgia. He and his wife, born Mary Knight, established a school for girls in Athens. Additional information about the Allan family is found in a letter from Anglen to Laura Carter, at the time the head of the Heritage Room.
