Biographical / Historical

Athens Night Life changed its name to Classic City, which in turn soon thereafter changed its name to Classic City Live! The magazine featured articles about local music and nightclubs, and touring musicians performing in Athens, as well as movie reviews, concert listings, restaurant listings, information about classes, exhibits, theatrical performances, etc., and on occasion local news. As an advertising-supported free publication, researchers are likely to find the copious ads throughout each issue to be of value in documenting modern Athens history. From its beginnings in 1983, the magazine covered the local music scene, following in detail the development of local acts. For example, in 1983 alone there were cover articles on Love Tractor and the B-52’s and two cover articles on Pylon. Also profiled that year was Chris Javo, the proprietor of the Last Resort at the time. In 1984 there are cover articles on the strip club Bourbon Street and music group, Squalls, as well as an article on the controversial “Drink and Drown” nights sponsored by certain local bars at the time.
